Queensland Hydro's proposed 5,000 MW Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project, located approximately 75km west of Mackay. If developed, it would be the largest project of its kind in the world, with an initial cost estimate exceeding $12 billion. The Queensland Government indicated in February 2024 that costs will be higher than originally estimated.
The project would create over 3,000 jobs during construction, with delivery planned by 2035. It is currently in the early investigation and detailed technical study stage. The project is a centrepiece of Queensland's Energy and Jobs Plan and would provide massive dispatchable storage capacity to underpin the state's renewable energy transition.
